Visit to Nike's European logistics centre in Belgium
Today, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo paid a visit to Nike's European logistics centre in Laakdal. More than a million sports goods are shipped from Laakdal to 39 countries.
Prime Minister Alexander De Croo was welcomed by John Donahoe, President and CEO of Nike. He was given a tour of the distribution centre there and also spoke to Nike employees.
Nike opened its Laakdal facility in 1994 and today it provides permanent employment to 7,000 people, mainly from the provinces of Antwerp and Limburg. At peak times, this number goes up to 8,000 employees. Nike not only focuses on innovation, but also on sustainability. Nike's logistics centre is powered by 100% renewable energy. Its transport is also sustainable: containers carrying shoes, clothing and equipment are brought in over water, replacing some 14,000 trucks annually.
