Support for Ukraine's reconstruction

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo wants to use proceeds from Russian assets frozen by our country to rebuild Ukraine. He said this after talking to Ukrainian President Zelensky and Dutch Prime Minister Rutte in The Hague.

Belgium currently holds about 180 billion EUR in frozen Russian assets. Prime Minister De Croo now wants to use the entire interest on those funds for Ukraine's reconstruction.

Symbolic moment

The conversation with President Zelensky and the Dutch prime minister came at a special moment. Today, the Netherlands commemorates its war casualties and tomorrow on Liberation Day they celebrate freedom, human rights and democracy.

The venue of the conversation is also symbolic. The Hague is the city of Law and Peace where the International Criminal Court resides. A clear signal to Putin that his war crimes will not go unpunished.
