Prime Minister De Croo spoke with the Austrian Chancellor in Vienna
Prime Minister De Croo had a bilateral meeting with his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehammer last night.
Mr. De Croo travelled to Vienna at Mr. Nehammer's invitation to talk mainly about the asylum approach. The asylum problem is more topical than ever and strengthening Europe's external borders has become a matter of urgency.
Prime Minister De Croo advocates strong European measures to limit the number of incoming migrants and more European cooperation to speed up the return of irregular migrants to their home countries. Secondary migration within Europe must also be addressed. Asylum seekers cannot be allowed to transit from one country to another within Europe as this is a violation of the Dublin rules.
In addition to European migration policy, the two heads of government also discussed Ukraine, economic policy and the European Union. Belgium will preside the EU Council for six months from the end of this year.
