European Council greenlights vaccine export mechanism
During its meeting, the European Council gave the green light to the European Commission to proceed with the development of an export mechanism for vaccines. This should prevent companies that do not respect their agreements from exporting vaccines outside of Europe.
Alexander De Croo: "Vaccine manufacturers that do not respect their agreements with the European Union cannot be allowed to continue exporting vaccines outside the EU. At the same time, the European Council confirmed the importance of global value chains. We must continue to protect these as much as possible as well, because without these value chains, the production of vaccines in the European Union is also at risk of grinding to a halt. Activating the export mechanism remains the last resort."
The European Council also discussed Turkey, the digital agenda and had a discussion with US President Biden on strengthening transatlantic relations and the importance of multilateral cooperation, including on COVID-19.
