Climate Adaptation Summit: Prime Minister Alexander De Croo talks to actor and activist Idris Elba

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has emphasised the importance of technology, the input of young people and international cooperation in the fight against the consequences of climate change in a video call with actor and climate activist Idris Elba at the first virtual Climate Adaptation Summit.

The Climate Adaptation Summit gathers world leaders to find solutions on how the world can better arm itself against the consequences of climate change. The goal is for countries to exchange best practices and learn from each other about how to deal with extreme drought or heat, floods and rising sea levels.

Alexander De Croo, Prime Minister: "Everywhere in the world we already see the consequences of climate change on a daily basis. Farmers in particular suffer from the consequences of extreme drought, flooding and heat. Technological innovation is an important part of the solution. But the importance of women's emancipation should not be underestimated either."

International cooperation

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of international cooperation to find solutions for tackling the consequences of climate change.

Alexander De Croo: "The crises we are facing today have a global impact. Just think of the corona pandemic or climate change. Nobody will be safe until everybody is safe. Only by working together globally and learning from each other can we tackle these challenges. Climate change should not divide us, but unite us."

Everyone on board

Alexander De Croo: "If everyone comes together, the global community can take huge steps forward. Just look at the development of the coronavirus vaccines. I also see that 'can do' mentality among young people all over the world. That is why I am positive about the future. It's good to put our heads together and think about it, but it's even better to take action."
